date rape

With society growing as fast as it is there are many new concerns about our youth and the relationships of the youth with their families as well as partners and friends. Many do not believe that family plays as big a role as it should in the lives of the youth today. Date rape is one of the growing concerns. It seems that this unwanted forced sexual act is becoming more prominent and more talked about. Although the issue has been around for a long time, it has never been talked about to the extent it is now. It is very important that youth feel they can effectively communicate with their family member especially on matters as important as date rape. Date rape does not just affect the victim but it also has a great impact on the families of the rape victim and possibly the family of the rapist. Families are not aware of the impact they have on their children and it circumstances of date rape, the characteristics of parents can come into play. Family members can help in the prevention of date rape but in order to do so there are steps that need to be followed as well as valuable teaching tactics. Canadian society is always changing and Canadian families have to adapt accordingly to these changes in order to keep Canada

Family members contribute to the negative characteristics of both the rapist and the victim. Research by F. Scott Christopher, Mary Madura, and Lori Weaver (Premarital Sexual Aggressors: A Multivariate Analysis of Social, Relational, and Individual Variable.) proves that sexual aggression is learned through modeling of guardians and also the observations that the individual sees. By observing sexual aggression, the observer gains knowledge and regards this behaviour as acceptable. This leads to people believing that sexual aggression is okay. Rapists that have constantly seen the same behaviour believe that it is acceptable and that is why they do not consider what they do as rape.

Without a doubt, the people surrounding us everyday have a significant impact of the outcome of our character. When constantly surrounded by particular behaviour one adapts this behaviour unto them. Family members need to realize that characteristics of their children are so because of what the parents have patterned into them. Whether the family members realize it or not, they can change the characteristics of their children for better or for worse.

Mary E. Williams (1998) Date Rape San Diego: Greenhaven Press

Medical attention is an important aspect of date rape that has to be taken into consideration by family members. Sometimes the health consequences of date rape are overlooked but this should not be the case because it is a very serious matter. There are health issues such as pregnancy, aids, other sexually transmitted diseases, and other physical problems that can be the outcome of rape. Besides the health concerns, there are also many psychological concerns that need to be addressed by family members. Support is very important at this time in the victim's life. Psychologists are available and family members need to show the victim that outside help is readily available. The rapist can often deny the rape because they do not consider what happened to be rape. The family members cannot assume either way. Just listening to either side of the story with out making any assumptions is all a supportive family member can do.

Other aspects of date rape that would be beneficial to research would be the reactions of the victim, the rapists, and the reactions of the families of both. There are so many changing statistics about date rape in Canadian society and research could be made to see why these statistics are changing and whether or not the changes are for the better.
