A detailed Summary of hawthorne
In an effort to discuss the theme of initiation in "Kinsman" and "Goodman Brown", I feel it is necessary to first define what is meant by initiation. As a definition found in Webster's dictionary, initiation is described as the rites, ceremonies, ordeals or instructions in which one is made a member of a sect or society and is invested with a particular function or status. One might first think of an initiation as in a fraternity or a sorority which is what first came to my mind. As we immediately come to realize that something is amiss, Robin, being young and naive still happily searches for his cousin and can't seem to understand why everyone is snickering behind his back. His response to this is pure ignorance as he just continues his search. Through the dialogue, we learn that Robin's older brother is working for a living while Robin himself has decided to take the easy road and gain his fortune from his wealthy cousin. In the end, Robin discovers that his rich cousin is really a deadbeat who is !

"Young Goodman Brown" also deals with the theme of initiation but in a different way. Goodman Brown, a young and clever man sets out on a journey to prove his faith and overcome evil in order to live a happier and more fulfilled life. In this case, the theme of initiation finds Goodman Brown being given a "test" of faith. He is confident that he can resist temptation and survive his journey. At first he is suspicious and cautious, but as he travels and resists the first person he encounters, he begins to feel strong. This confidence contin
