Edwin Arlington Robinson
The Psychological Poetry of Edwin Arlington Robinson "Theirs is a good deal to live for, but a man has to go through hell really to find it out"- Edwin Arlington Robinson (Reuben "Chapter 7"). Robinson did not live up to this expectation. Some people believe he did not achieve the fame that he was capable of achieving (Adams "The Failure..."). But through his poetry, his phychological style of writing has caught the attention of many people. His ability to question and his shyness has modeled him to be both, an early Puritan and a modern psychologist (Untermeyer "Edwin Arlington ..."). Robinson was born in Head Tide, Maine in 1869 and grew up in Gardiner, Maine. His parents were Edward Robinson and Mary Palmer (The Gale Group). As a child, he was not very healthy and was teased by other children, so he kept to himself and began writing and reading (A Page For Edwin!). He attended Harvard for two years, but because of financial problems, he returned to his family (The Gale Group). Dean, one of his two brothers, was a doctor that had a drug addiction to morphine and later on committed suicide. His ability to write about the darker side of man has enlightened the minds of some people who have read his poetry. Although Robinson is not recognized as being one of the great writers of the 20th century, he has been saluted with three Pulitzer Prizes; that is more than anyone else, besides Robert Frost ( ). Amazingly enough, Robinson's poetry hadn't caught the attention of the public until he was over fifty years old!
