Peter the Great
Peter the Great of Russia was one of the most important czars. He did much traveling to see Europe. He tried to make his country successful by "westernizing" Russia. He also created his own city. Without Peter the Great, Russia would be behind the times. Peter's childhood was not an easy one, he had many hardships. Peter Alexeevich was born May 30, 1672. His father was Tsar Alexis I and his mother was Natalya Naryshkina. When Peter was 4 years old, his father died. When Peter was 10 years old he was crowned tsar. His half brother, Ivan, was crowned joint tsar with Peter, but since they were too young Peter's half sister, Sophia, became their regent. While she was regent, she started a revolution of the streltsy. During this revolution, Peter witnessed some of his own family members' executions. Peter's sole reign as tsar didn't come very easily. After the revolution of the streltsy, Peter's mother ran off with him to a village outside of Moscow. While Peter was there he had many playmates which he loved to play soldier with. By the time he was 17, his playmates became as good as an army. In the summer of 1689, when Peter was 17 years old, he learned that Sophia was planning to have him killed. He fled to the mo

Ivan denounced his claim to the throne and the streltsy surrendered. In November of 1724, while sailing, Peter saw a boat about to be capsized. So he jumped into the water to help save the crew. By being in the very cold water, Peter came down with a cold. He seemed to be better near Christmas but then got sick again. On January 28, 1725 Peter the Great died in St. Petersburg. He left no successor. He was buried in Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg. In 1712, Peter declared St. Petersburg the new capital of Russia and ordered the Senate to reestablish themselves there. Also during the war Peter had many problems with his son Alexis. Alexis had been away with his mother, Eudokia Lopukhin, since she was sent to a convent and didn't really know his father. Many people in the nobility who didn't like Peter wanted Alexis to take over. In 1718, Peter ordered Alexis back to Russia promising him that he would forgive him. When Alexis arrived he publicly renounced his claim to the throne and on the same day was arrested. A court ordered him to be executed for treason but was first put to torture. He
