In today's society, Henrik Ibsen's play A Doll's House is still seen as a great work of literature. Yet, that is not the reason it is so remarkable. During the period it was written, very few works expressed such controversial messages. It advocated women's rights and defied beliefs that a woman should be subservient to a man. This is what makes A Doll's House an even more significant piece of literature. It is not about the story's apparent conflict: Nora's desperate attempt to keep her husband from discovering her trickery. It is the inner conflict that is truly important: Nora's desire to find out who she is outside of the dollhouse.
