Analysis of Children's Television Program

The children's television program that I reviewed was "Doug", a cartoon focusing on a school age boy and his daily experiences. My 9-year-old daughter watches this program frequently, she knew all the regular characters by name and knew their personalities. She suggested this program for my homework assignment.

This episode begins with Doug in his room at home listening to the radio and cleaning out his closet, while his best friend Skeeter (his skin is green!) looks on. Doug finds his old "lucky" hat and immediately puts it on claiming he will again be lucky because of the hat. The radio station announces a prize to the fifteenth caller and Skeeter urges Doug to call now that he has his lucky hat on. Doug calls the radio station amidst grumbles of never winning these contests, when he is announced as the fifteenth caller and the winner. Doug's mother enters the room, carrying a pair of x-ray goggles she found in the laundry. Doug states he lost them 2 months ago, and it is because of the lucky hat that his luck is on the rise. pulls lucky hat off Doug's head saying he is taking a test next period and will wear the hat. Again Doug daydreams he is alone and poor without the hat and Roger is rich and successful because he has the lucky hat. Doug explains to Patty how he feels his hat brings him luck. Patty discusses with Doug how every person makes their own luck, by working hard and being honest or as our text states industrious and competent demonstrating Erickson's fourth crisis of psychosocial development. Roger appears happy he passed the test with a "D ", Doug tells Roger he can keep the hat, but the wind again blow the hat away. When Skeeter and Roger ask Doug if he is going to catch the lucky hat, Doug says it is someone else's turn to have the lucky hat, he will make his own luck.

The third commercial was for Kool-Aid. The big cartoon pitcher of red Kool-Aid creates a winter wonderland for snowboarders in the middle of summer. All the children appear to be expert skiers and snowboarders, while drinking Kool-Aid. This allows older children to regress to the pleasant experience of magical thinking. The advertisement wants children to associate Kool-Aid with a happy, carefree, magical time.
