A detailed Summary of Plato "Allegory of the Cave"


After reading Plato's "Allegory of the Cave," one can only agree with Socrates when he states that "...the power and capacity of learning exists in the soul already..." (Plato 282) . this is easily interpreted as meaning that humans are born with the natural strength, potential, and desire for learning without the help of others. As Socrates speaks he implies that if people didn't have the aid of others, they would still learn despite the absence of someone to walk them through life.

Though many children are aided through life and guided to learn life experiences, it is quite obvious that a child will be able to learn some life skills necessary for survival without the help from others. In other words children are born with an innate potential to learn essential skills by themselves. Even today, aside from all the guidance children get from adults, there are still a number of things children learn by themselves: babies learn to crawl by themselves, and as they mature some toddlers learn to walk without the help from a


Education can also tie in with Socrates statement, "...the power and capacity of learning exist in the soul already..." (Plato 282). Education is one of the few ways that helps to bring out the natural desire to learn. When people become uninterested or unaware of things it results back to the cave, meaning that we live in our own stubborn ways not aware of what's really out there, instead only aware of what we know.
