Snow in August

A detailed Summary of Snow in August

Snow in August by Pete Hamill was a brilliant fable not only for our time but also for all time. The setting was the year 1947 in Brooklyn, the war veterans had come home, the first black man makes it to the major leagues, and great prejudice against race and religion is present.

While reading this book I built a strong relationship and admiration for the character Michael Devlin. Michael was an 11-year-old Irish Catholic boy whose father had died in the war. Being the responsible boy that he portrays in this book he sacrifices going out to play with his friends to help his mom. Additionally, he is an alter boy which duties include waking up to be at church by 8 o'clock in the morning. He then returns home to have breakfast with his mom. He then follows his heart and grows attached to this lonely, loving, innocent, and wonderful rabbi. It was adorable how Michael was a teacher to the rabbi, a grown man, and how the rabbi expressed his appreciation in such a genuine childlike manner.

right path and it's revealed at the end of this story.

dices of the time. Terrorized by a local gang of Irish punks, Michael and the rabbi are caught in an escalating spiral of hate for which there only one way out is a miracle. This miracle is exposed in the conclusion of this story. That if not a firm believer of miracles or the supernatural you might think the end was ridiculous. I, being a firm believer of my Roman Catholic religion and of God as well as supernatural causes, felt that the end result of this novel was not at all ridiculous but rather it contained such great beauty, hope, and faith for ones beliefs in God.
