dickinson because I

Emily Dickinson's poem "Because I could Not Stop for Death" is one of her most discussed and famous poems due to its ambiguous, particular and different view on the popular subject of death. Death in this poem is told as a woman's last trip, which is headed to eternity. This poem helps to characterize and bring death down to a more personal level. Different from the more popular views of death such as Death being brutal and cruel, Dickinson makes death seem passive and easy. The theme of the poem being that death is natural and unstoppable for everybody but that death at the same time is not the end of a soul's journey. The reader can recognize the poem's theme by analyzing its voice, imagery, figures of speech, form, diction and especially symbolism; all of which help the reader to understand the poem's meaning.

I had never been the type of person to pick up a poem and read it on my own free will. Well I'm not going to lie and tell you that I just simply love poems but I will say that some are better than others. It wasn't until I was introduced to Emily Dickinson's poetry that I started to appreciate it. It was my junior year in highschool in my computer graphics class that I was assigned to build a web page about Amer

support the idea that she is headed towards and eternity of emptiness.

The two-line stanza that follows supports the view of humans being vulnerable to death. The speaker feels the chill of death and is vulnerable because all she is wearing is a gown made of thin materials. She feels helpless and the reader can feel it. The wet chill surrounding her and her vulnerability to it symbolize the coldness and cruelty of death.

As I read her poems I realized that her poems are different, not only are they profound but I could actually understand her poems. She writes about things in different ways that I had never considered possible. Such is the case of "Because I could Not Stop for Death", in which she makes death into a woman's last journey. In accomplishing this magical and almost fairytale like mood she uses many different techniques.

The poem "Because I could Not Stop for Death" gave the reader a new view of the arrival of Death. Dickinson makes it seem like Death is something natural and that should be taken happily. Still the tone of the poem switches direction when the speaker starts feeling the chill of death and her vulnerability becomes evident to the reader. Dickinson uses symbolism in describing the wet chill and the thin gown the speaker is wearing. Dickinson uses form to make stanzas of especial importance stand out by using more and less lines. The main idea of the poem through out the story being that despite the things going on around you Death will come despite what you are doing because Death has all the power and time in the world. The serenity and passiveness that is consistent throughout the whole poem makes the destination of the trip seems frightening as she seems to be slipping into oblivion. So the question of eternity is never answered.

Attention is brought to the third stanza by usage of form because it is not like the preceding four-line stanzas but is a six-line. The third poem is also rich with imagery and describes the passiveness and s
