Louis Riel
Imagine that the land you have been living on for years has been taken away. The government promises to help you technically and financially, but nothing is done to help. You and your family are starving and dying. This is what the government did to the Metis & First Peoples in the late 1800's. Louis Riel was a man who led two rebellions in Canada to help the lives of the Metis and the First Peoples, so they can have the rights that they deserve. How should Riel be viewed in Canadian history? Riel should be viewed as a HERO to the Canadian people because he fought for the rights of those who were being treated unfairly due to the government. First of all, Louis Riel was the leader of the Metis people and he helped them get rights so they could live! The Metis were very upset towards the government. Their land was surveyed into square blocks and their long; narrow river-lot farms were being ignored. They wanted people to respect their culture (mainly the language and the religion). Louis Riel became their leader because he was well educated, he was born in the Red River Settlement, and he was a very persuasive speaker who spoke both English and French. Second of all, Louis Riel came back to Canada in the year of 1884 to again have a rebellion because the government did not care at all about the lives of the Metis and First Peoples. The Metis and First Peoples had been highly affected by the Buffalo disappearing. More and more surveyors came into Manitoba and were killing the Buffalo. The Metis decided to move westward. Since the government did not care about the Metis or First People, the government made considerable cutbacks in their treaty promise. On March 19, 1885, Riel setup another provisional government, and the North-West Resistance began on March 26, 1885. Gabriel Dumont and a group of Metis attacked superintendent Crozier of the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) and some of his men. Twelve of Croziers men died, eleven were hurt, and five Metis got killed. Chief Poundmaker (of the First People) went to Battleford to meet with the government agent to see if he can get food and supplies for his people. When Po! speak the Native way. He went on this tour for months, so the government had time think about what to do. Riel then sent a Petition of Rights to Ottawa, but nothing was done. The government just ignored it. The NWMP, missionaries, and other also warned the government that if they kept on ignoring the Metis & First Peoples, then trouble would be brewing ahead.
