Gimpel the Fool Characterization Essay

Reb Gimpel is the main character in Isaac Bashevis Singer's Gimpel the Fool. The reader

obtains information about Gimpel's character and personality by not only what he says or

does, but by what others say about him as well. The majority of the townspeople like to

tease Gimpel and tell him stories that are not anywhere near to the truth. Due to the fact

that Gimpel believes all of this information, everyone makes a fool of him, whenever

possible. When Gimpel informs the reader that he does nothing to stop the teasing and

show Gimpel's gullibility include his marriage to Elka and the birth of her children, when

Gimpel came upon his wife with the apprentice, and the remarks of all the people in town.

he marries Elka. He is aware that Elka is known as a whore. Yet when she does not

respond to the question he asks about her reputation, he pays no mind and marries her

anyway. Not four months after the marriage, she had given birth to a baby boy. When

Gimpel asked Elka who's child it was, she ar

Perhaps the biggest clue to Gimpel's gullibility is what the all the townspeople say

characters feed off the fact that he is not the brightest crayon in the box. All of Gimpel's

Another equally demonstrative incident is when Gimpel finds his wife in bed with

that Gimpel allows it, proves to the reader that Gimpel is exceedingly naive. The other
