In "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker the quilts are the backbone of the family's heritage. It represents the story of their past. The bits and pieces vary from the scraps of dresses Grandma Dee Wore fifty years ago to the faded blue tiny piece of Great Grandpa Ezra's uniform he wore in the Civil War. The quilts also represent the memories of how Maggie's' grandmother taught her to quilt. When Dee came back to visit, she looked as if she was not part of the household.
