Uniforms in Public High Schools

A detailed Summary of Uniforms in Public High Schools

Will I catch my crush's eye wearing this skirt? Will someone else be wearing the exact same thing? Will my friends like this outfit? These are just some of the questions public high school students ask themselves before selecting their daily ensemble. Choosing an outfit for school has become a time consuming process for high school students. In addition to being an educational institution, high schools have also become a fashion show. Teenagers parade around the halls in the newest fashions, just to be noticed by their peers. Students are judged by what they are wearing on a daily basis by their peers and teachers. In his essay, "Three for the Stripes," Michael Fitzpatrick recalls a time when his fellow classmates made fun of him because he didn't wear name-brand shoes. First, they would eliminate the emphasis put on fashion, and increase the importance of getting a good education. The less a student concentrates on what they or another student is wearing, the more they will concentrate on their education. Next, teachers and students would be less likely to judge other students on what they are wearing, but rather on how they perform in the classroom. Having a set uniform would put all students at the same level, and let their academic performance speak for itself. Finally, I think the amount of ever-present cliques would be greatly reduced, and have less to do with fashion and more to do with academics, clubs, and sports. While I was in high school, I wish we would've had uniforms because I didn't like the everyday stress of picking out my ensemble just to impress my friends.

belong to, and what sports they play; all of which are much more important than what they are wearing. If everyone wore the same uniform, there wouldn't be as many groups trying to outdo the other based on fashion.

e the importance of getting a good education. Many students I know spend a great deal of their time and money selecting their outfits for school. If you look in the newspapers around early August, you can't help but notice the large amount of back-to-school advertisements and sales. Students rush out to get the latest fashions at the best prices. They
