Technology or Death

Since the 1850's and the start of the industrial revolution humanity has quickly gained a high level of technology. For years, they advanced without knowing the disturbance they are causing to the environment by gaining technology so fast. Three authors found in "Interconnections", by Lea Clark, discuss pollution and other ecological affects. The first author, Thomas Palmer, refutes the idea that humans have become the ruiners of the planet so to speak. The second author, Ronald Bailey, agrees that apocalyptic environmental concerns are a hoax but feels that journalist and politicians use them as a propaganda technique. The final author, J. Baldwin, believes that humans need to embrace technology to survive and use it as a tool to help us along instead of abandoning it and reverting back to a more simplistic life. All three authors have good arguments with fantastic supporting details although I do not particularly agree with all of them.

The next author is Thomas Bailey. Like Palmer, Bailey uses the apocalyptic metaphor to organize his doubts about the state of the environment. (Interconnections, Carol Lea Clark). Bailey was a staff writer for Forbs magazine where he produced a variety of business topics. He also produced the Public Broadcasting Service's weekly talk shows Think Tank and Techno-Politics. Bailey states that politicians and journalist make a gain off of predictions they make about doomsday. For example, prediction number one, Global Famine. " The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970's the world will undergo famines-hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now" (Interconnections, Carol Lea Clark). The attitude of this article is dark and depressing. It makes a lot of unscientifical statements about dooms day predictions. This article really opened my mind on thoughts of the world. I never really sat down and thought !
