A Changed Man

The short story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell is about the hunter and the hunted. Later in the story it becomes ironic when the hunter becomes the hunted. The story turns into a competition for survival. The author uses the story to present three conflicts for the main character that eventually change him. Rainsford has conflicts with other people, nature, and himself.

The main conflict of the story is man versus man. The first conflict presented in the story is between Rainsford and his partner Whitney. They are hunters who are headed to the Amazon to hunt vicious animals such as jaguars and tigers. The conflict arises when Whitney and Rainsford disagree about hunting being "the best sport in the world." Although both are hunters, Whitney believes hunting is only the best "for the hunter" and "not for the jaguar." Rainsford's beliefs are quite contrary, however, asking "who cares how a jaguar feels?" Whitney believes the animals all know fear of pain and fear of dying. Rainsford thinks of himself as a realist, stating "the world is made up of two classes-the hunters and the huntees." This conflict is never resolved as the two decide to change the subject.

The second type of conflict presented is man versus nature. Rainsford has many conflicts with nature in the story. After he falls off the boat, "the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea," drown his screams for help and the resistance of the water is too great for any chance to catch the boat. His only chance of survival is to swim toward an island he cannot see through the darkness. Rainsford overcomes this by swimming toward screams coming from the island. "With his remaining strength he dragged himself from the swirling waters," and onto the island. Once he is involved in the hunt on the island, he encounters "rude paths," an unforgiving jungle, a swamp and the sea again. These conflicts are all resolved when Rainsford overcomes the forces of nature and survives. These conflicts change Rainsford as he gains a greater respect for nature.

and General Zaroff is another example of the man versus man conflict. Rainsford, after falling overboard and swimming to the island, meets General Zaroff, who has bought an island on which to hunt. Zaroff is a sportsman who has invented a new version of the hunting game. His game is to train those men whose ships were wrecked and ended up on his island. He then provides them with food and a knife for
