BUCKLE UP AMERICA

In New York, during 1984, the year seatbelt laws were enacted, approximately 16% of individuals wore seat belts. 1,012 people who were unrestrained died in motor vehicle accidents. Just one year later, compliance rates rose to 57% and unrestrained deaths dropped to 644. Since then, compliance rates have steadily rose and senseless deaths decreased.

Most unrestrained fatalities fall within the 16 to 44 age group. This is also the age group into which most parents fall. A recent study by the American Academy of Pediatrics indicates that when drivers do buckle up, 87% of children riding with them are also restrained. However, when drivers are unbuckled, only 24% of children riding with them are restrained. It is the responsibility of parents and other adults to take responsibility for their young passengers.

Moreover, Americans also felt the seat belts were "uncomfortable". In actuality, modern seat belts are made so comfortable that you wonder if they really work. Most of them give when you move - a device locks them into place only when the car stops suddenly. You can put a little bit of slack in most belts simply by pulling on the shoulder strap. Others come with comfort clips, which hold the belt in a slightly slackened position. If the belt won't fit around you, you can get a belt extender at most car dealerships.
