Novels about war presumably have a great deal of similarity. Many of the same aspects are shown through them. Even though the novels aren't exactly the same, it's possible to point out one similarity and follow through. Suffering is generated into hate from war novels. In The Things They Carried and Night, there was an amount of suffering shown through hate.

In The Things They Carried, O'Brien showed hatred towards war and killing. He hated the fact that America was fighting a war that made people suffer. "I was drafted to fight a war I hated...American war in Vietnam seemed to me wrong. Certain blood was being shed for uncertain reasons" (O'Brien 40). O'Brien's opinions showed hatred towards the war. The Vietnamese suffered for no defined reasons. Not only did the Vietnamese suffer, but the American soldiers suffered also. Most soldiers had to defend something they didn't believe in. "There were occasions, I believed, when a nation was justified in using military force to achieve its ends, to stop Hitler or some comparable evil, and I told myself that in such circumstances I would've willingly marched off to battle" (O'Brien 44). Enemies were hated because there was no way anyone could've been trusted. O'Brien wrote about these enemies in his novel. "Jensen couldn't relax...No safe ground: enemies everywhere. No front or rear. At night he had trouble sleeping-a skittish feeling-always on guard, imagining a grenade rolling into his foxhole or the tickle of a knife behind his ear" (O'Brien 63). The character Jensen seemed to be suffering from a mental incapability. In Night, hate was basically directed, though not always, towards a group of people. It's well known that anti-Semitic people hated the Jews. "The Jews in Budapest are living in an atmosphere of fear and terror. There are anti-Semitic incidents everyday, in the streets, in the trains. The Fascists are attacking Jewish shops and synagogues. The situation is getting very serious" (Wiesel 7). Jews suffered from hateful mistreatment. They were deprived from their so-called "natural rights."
