I had seen something I wished I had not, my first assassination. It would bring me quick fame when I returned home. I, being the only American Reporter, there at the time, saw everything. I also caught it on film. My pictures were fantastic whom, you might ask, none other than "the heir" of the powerful Austria, the Archduke Francis Ferdinand. I later returned to Vienna, as my trying to interview the assassin, Gaurlo Princip. I went to a short press conference to hear the rules of Austria-Hungary. His uncle seemed to be upset, but I didn't buy it. I knew he has something to do with it, but I didn't dare speak. I did not wish to start another international incident.

I now must pack my bags. Although many say Europe is beautiful, I have seen its ugly side and I do not like it. Good bye dear journal!

The Battle of Verun signaled that this was to be a long war. The battle is an overall stalemate. More than 750,000 French and German troops die. In July the Battle of Somme raged. Many are dead or wounded and the Allies gained a measly seven miles. The weaponry and technology is incredible. The newest weapon, not to mention the most deadly, is poison gas. If you breathe it in, you will most certainly die. The British came up with tanks, which in my opinion look like huge cockroaches. My favorite new weapon would have to be the airplane. They can bomb, watch for enemy troop movements, and move troops. "D
