Dracula
Bram Stoker's Dracula is a literary classic, which has stood the test of time. Dracula, written in 1897, refers to mythical creatures, which in the 20th century have important scientific merit. Dracula is a novel, which is more appealing to modern readers then it was to readers of the past, who could not fully appreciate it because of the way in which the society has evolved. It is a classic novel and although it is long toward the end, it is very entertaining. Rather then telling the story from a first person view, the author writes it in a first person view in the form a diary. There are many characters in this novel and every character portraits interesting and different personalities that go very well with the plot. In this novel, there are 11 main characters. Although some appear more then others, they are all important in creating the atmosphere Bram Stoker is trying to create. The most important character is Count Dracula. He is a vampire who has been alive for several hundred years. He keeps himself alive by sucking blood from live victims. He is a tall old man, with a long white mustache and is dressed in black from head to toe. He is clean cut, and is without a single speck of col
This story portraits many examples of both man versus man and man versus himself. Dracula is constantly against the other characters in this novel, as well as with himself. All the people who are vampires are constantly fighting a battle within themselves. An example of this is when Lucy attacks Arthur Holmwood. That is her fiancee they she loves and wishes to marry. Because she is a vampire, she is fighting within herself over whether she should bite Holmwood or not. She feels that this is a perfect opportunity to get some blood. She has to decide whether to keep the one she loves and be weak, or kill the one she loves to gain strength. She is no longer of sound-mind, so her impulses go toward gaining strength. The next couple of nights, Lucy is discovered standing next to the window with a bat next to her. What is also noticed is that Lucy's health is fading and gets worse day by day. Mina finds out that Lucy's mother, Mrs. Westenra, is very sick but refuses to tell Lucy because she feels that it will only cause Lucy to get worse. Dr. Seward, Lucy's former suitor, comes to check on Lucy. He is unable to determine the reason for Lucy's fading health. Dr. Seward calls his friend, Dr. Van Helsing, for another medical opinion. Dr. Van Helsing is disturbed by the two dots on her throat and her major loss of blood since there is no sign of hemorrhaging. It became necessary to give Lucy blood transfusions, and after each one, Lucy became a lot better. Both doctors finally decide that it is necessary to fill Lucy's room, as well as her neck, with garlic, which is a technique to make vampires stay away. However, the vampires manage to break the spell and attacks Lucy again. One night, an escaped wolf was used to smash the window to Lucy's room. The wolf's attack frightens Lucy's mother so much, that she dies from shock. Shortly after, Lucy is attacked by the vampire again. In conclusion, Bram Stoker's Dracula is a very exciting and fascinating novel. The plot is very well structured and very suspenseful. The author also uses his historic knowledge of Europe, very well in conveying a certain atmosphere for this novel to take place in. Initially, the Count remains a mysterious character for a specific reason. This allowed for the main characters to slowly discover whom the Count really was thus developing the character slowly for the reader. The intrigue built into his character intensified the mystery. Suspense was used extensively throughout the novel. The book is probed deeply into people's superstitions, fears, and beliefs of the supernatural, and how others are skeptic to them, and proved wrong. In all, Dracula is a clever, exciting, and suspenseful that uses a ruthless villain to terrify you but forces you to read more. or about him anywhere. He has very sharp white teeth,
