Emotions, difficult to describe, yet still remain the universal language of the human race. No matter how esoteric emotions may seem, people must strive to truly comprehend them if they ever wish to live happy and fulfilling lives. Probably one of the greatest oversights in understanding emotions is believing that emotions are instinctual. Many people believe that they have no control over their emotions. The moment something happens to "trigger" one of these emotions, then it is inevitable that they must react immediately under the influence of their emotion. For example, if an unenlightened person in the realm of emotions was insulted, then their immediate emotional reaction would be to become angry and reciprocate the insult. What many people fail to realize is that emotions are entirely determined by their own choosing.

"Emotions are judgments," said Robert Soloman. This may seem like a radical idea to most people, for emotions do not seem to be under our control. Perhaps Robert Nozick stated it best in his analysis of emotions by suggesting that, "Emotions...have a common structure of three components: a belief, an evaluation, and a feeling..." In light of these concepts, it is easier to comprehend the truth: we de


termine our own emotional reality.

An emotion, in my opinion, is an intangible state that we experience when we are subjected to different events or circumstances. Although, the emotions we experience are left entirely up to our attitude towards the various episodes in our lives. Depression is maybe the most dangerous of all emotions, for those who have reached the depths of depression are so volatile that day-to-day life is just too much for them to handle. Everything loses meaning, and there is virtually nothing that can change their state of mind. What causes this? An overwhelming feeling of self-pity and apathy towards everything but your own sad state. This "sad state" is usually spawned from a single event that causes a vicious chain of thoughts and thrusts you into depression. One of the most common times when people become depressed is when they experience the rejection of being "dumped" by their significant other. The initial sting of the separation that is seemingly your fault is very conduciv!

Many people may object to this concept, and write it off as a myth or a fantasy. These people are merely envious of those who have taken the effort to try and better themselves when they (the skeptics) have never tried it themselves.
