Dualities and Fall from InnocenceDualities and Fall from Innocence in " Shiloh"

Dualities and Fall from Innocence in " Shiloh"

Throughout life, fall from innocence and dualities assist people in becoming mature adults. Leroy and Norma Jean experience many obstacles through their lives and also through their marriage. Leroy Moffitt who is an injured truck driver, encounters many obstacles in life which aid in making him a mature adult. Norma Jean, who is Leroy's wife, has many problems also, along with her husband. The short story "Shiloh" by Bobbie Ann Mason exemplifies dualities and fall from innocence clearly.

Through fall from innocence people grow emotionally, also experience pain and disappointment. A loss of innocence was experienced when Leroy and Norma Jean were wed at the young age of eighteen. People who marry at young age are more likely to get divorced according to many studies.

Different moods, feelings and attitudes as dualities are depicted in " Shiloh." A duality in Leroy was when he was on the road; he never appreciated the beautiful scenery. When he was at home injured, he began to build things and appreciate many things. " Leroy has grown to appreciate how things are to put together. He has begun to realize that in all the years he was on the road he never took time to examine anything. He was always flying past scenery." (Mason 422) Before Randy died, Norma Jean and Leroy were a caring family, but after the death of their boy they felt very awkward around each which shows a change of moods between the two. " Before his accident, when Leroy came home he used to stay in the house with Norma Jean, watching t.v. in bed and playing cards. She would cook fried chicken, picnic ham, chocolate pie-all
