Schizophrenia is a set of disorders with a multitude of symptoms. It includes cognitive symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disturbed thought processes, and flooding (stimulus overload). (Holmes, 1997) It may also involve mood and motor symptoms, and there is an ongoing debate on whether somatic symptoms are involved. Hallucinations are perceptions or experiences that are a distortion of reality. Hallucinations are the symptoms most associated with schizophrenia. Delusions are very similar to hallucinations and are also very often associated with schizophrenia. Delusions are erroneous beliefs that a patient adheres to even though there is significant evidence to the contrary.
