Have you ever tried to put out a fire with a bucket that had a hole in it? If you have then you've found out that it does not work. This is one of the examples that you will find in the book "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad.
Marlow, the main character in the book, tries to figure out exactly how he could put this fire out with a hole in the bucket. What he is really trying to decide is how you fix something once you have destroyed it.
The country of Africa is being destroyed and parts are being taken over, Marlow wants to try to find a way to stop it or maybe even to fix it. Marlow feels that he is a part of the countries problems because he is in the country. In reality Marlow has nothing to do with the problems at all. He takes this job that his aunt helped him get, and went right to the problem, right in the middle of Africa and the Congo, to try and play some kind of sa
The book "Heart of Darkness" has a lot of symbolism in it. When Marlow was hiking the 200 miles up the Congo river he went past a hill. For some reason he decided to go up the very large hill and when he got up to the top he stood there , and thought that he was closer to heaven so maybe he would be cleansing himself for all the things that he had done. As he starts to walk down the hill you can tell that he seems to be getting a little depressed, he fells that he is getting closer to reality and in a sense descending to hell where he would be forced to be accountable for all his sin . Joseph Conrad makes it very known that he likes to use symbolism in his work and although this piece was a actual experience of his he did a wonderful job of distancing himself and making it a work of fiction.
