In loco Parentis

In loco parentis, policies are very important for a college to succeed. In loco parentis is Latin for "in place of parents". Not too many parents would want to send their child where there are no rules. Not too many who want an education would go to a college where there are no rules? A little structure never hurts anybody. A rule is designed to keep students out of trouble, not just to make the students unhappy. A rule is designed to keep students out of trouble, and focus on their education. If there were no rules, not too many students would make it to class; this would result in many dropouts.

The college tries to set up the rules so everyone is happy. Everybody knows this isn't possible. You have students who come to college to party, and you have students who come to learn. So, the colleges try to work with the students to come up with a compromise. That is why the in loco parentis policy is in place. Students are allowed to have visitors, but at certain times. This rule is put into effect so an outside person hurts no one. This is for the safety of the students.

When a committee sits down to think up rules, what do you think would be the first things that would come to

Last, but certainty not least, the school works hard to see that students believe the school is well functioning college. If things are disorganized, students won't want to attend that school. Schools tend to work hard to make everything run as smoothly as possible. This all goes back to the in loco parentis policy. If students are going crazy, then there will not be any organization. This could result in losing a possible student.

When recruits or perspective students arrive for a college visit, they are expecting to learn more about the college. To land these students, the school needs to sell them the college. In other words, tell all the good things about the college. For example, the school rules on maintaining 2.0 and 12 credit hours to stay eligible for sports. Alternatively, how you have to talk with your advisor before you drop or add a class. This is all beneficial to student's success in college, and to make the college looking inviting to possible students.

mind? Of course, it would be safety of their students. What potential student would pick a college where anything goes and safety wasn't a concern? College where anything goes my be fun, but it also could result in major injury or lawsuits.

Another thing is that the colleges job isn't to tell us what class to take or what class to drop. That is something we as students should be in control of. Their main job should be to educate, not to baby-sit us and slap our hand when we don't come to class. We are paying for it so who cares if we are passing or failing, or if we are coming to class or not. It is our life. They should allow us to live it the way we want to. On the other hand, not every student is mature enough to make these choice
