The main characters in both novels demonstrated a great amount of self-determination and persistence, giving the word ambition a whole new meaning. In the novels Not Without My Daughter by William Hoffer and Shindler's List by Thomas Keneally, the main characters established similar characteristics that resulted in a victorious outcome. Betty Mahmoody and Oscar Shindler both displayed powerful ambition, and revealed it through their courage, intelligence and loyalty, throughout the novel. During World War II in 1939, Oskar Schiendler a highly respected man who proved himself to be one of the bravest men who ever lived. He was an extremely wealthy member of the Nazi party and an influencing man who had the courage to aid the misfortunate Jews. Adolph Hitler was a man who ruled the Nazi party, to murder all Jews; his motives were never questioned. Once Oskar learned of Hitler's plan to execute all Jews, he began his pursuit of saving as many Jews as possible.

Schiendler worked his entire life on a company he built up; he had neglected it and hired as many Jews as possible illegally. This took strength because if anyone had known the truth of this scandal, he would been killed instantly. Oskar in several cases also showed his courageous side, as he constantly ordered Nazi's not to kill Jews, they would suffer severely from the consequences. Oskar also prepared a list of as many people as possible, and made them fake passports, which saved many from entering the concentration camps full of gas chambers.

Having a dream, and letting no one stay in ones way to achieve it, is the true definition of ambition. In the novels Not Without My Daughter and Schiendler's List, ambition played the main role, which generated a powerful correlation among both main characters; Betty Mahmoody and Oskar Schiendler. The main characters each held ambition and achieved their dreams at the end. Their characters were similar due to these qualities evident throughout both novels. Courage was shown by both Betty and Oskar, as Betty had to go against her own husband and his family and Oskar had to go against his own religion and race which were the Nazis. Intelligence was evident with Mahmoody as she was able to find the escape route out of Iran, and Oskar was able to arise with the most inventive idea of The List of Life. Being loyal towards the laws and rules in Betty's case and Oskar's giving food and shelter to those in need were distinctive signs of loyalty and intelligence. Both these novels a!

He was loyal to the Jews that he even let them practice their Jewish religion. He allowed them to read their Bibles, and celebrate holidays in his factory, and in his presence. He also held a three minute silence period to all those who died, because he felt a lot of sympathy for them, and for their families.
