Mozart
Europe in the early and mid 18th century was marking time, trying to catch its breath after the bloody excesses of the previous century. Religious conflicts had almost wiped out the population of Germany and had split it politically. While larger nation-states were forming elsewhere, the middle of the continent was still a collection of independent kingdoms, dukedoms, principalities and cities that were organized into what they called the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nations. It was during this time that a young man by the name of Leopold Mozart was starting to forge his role as a chamber musician in the city of Salzburg. Able to earn a nice sized steady income from his position, he at age 28 married Anna Maria Pertl on November 21, 1747. Despite being a popular and happily married couple, they did not live without peril. They had five of their children die during infancy, which was not uncommon during that period. The Mozart's first child to survive infancy, Maria Anna "Nannerl" Mozart, was a musical child prodigy. Born in Salzburg on July 31, 1751, she was quickly considered one of the best pianists in the area. She would go on to become famous throughout the continent as one of the most gifted child m
Lovers of music, and all those who find some pleasure in extraordinary things, are herewith apprized that on Thursday next, 18th August, at Scharf's Hall on the Liebfrauenberg, a concert will be held at 6 o'clock in the evening, at which two children, namely a girl of 12 and a boy of 7, will be heard to play with incredible dexterity concertos, trios and sonatas, and the boy also the same on the violin. And if this be unheard-of and incredible in such young children and with such power, since the boy is complete master of the keyboard; so much so that these two children's skill not only astonished the Electoral Courts of Saxony, Bavaria and that Palatinate, but also afforded exceptional entertainment to His Imperial and Royal Majesty during a 4 month's visit to Vienna, and were the object of general wonderment: so we hope the more readily to procure some pleasure to the public of this city; for we know of no-one in a position to say truthfully that he has ever seen o! In August 1782 Wolfgang, against the will of his father, was married to Constanze Weber. Shortly after their marriage, Mozart started to get acquainted with all the local musicians and began listening to some of the great Baroque composers like Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel. A few years later Mozart started to compose for the local Masonic celebrations. Not long after that he was asked to join. Things seemed like they couldn't get better for Mozart during this time. His opera Le nozze di Figaro was getting rave reviews from both critics and fellow musicians, and he was no longer tormented by financial problems. Then three horrid events took place. Mozart's first child, Raimund, died three months after birth. Then not long after, his wife Constanze became dangerously ill. Finally in April of 1787, Leopold Mozart died causing Wolfgang's heart to be filled with guilt and anger. It was while he was in this state of mind that Mozart composed what co! People were very critical of the young Mozart. Before his opera seria, Mitridate, re di Ponte's first rehearsal everyone was talking about how it was impossible for a child to understand the theatre and could write nothing that could be considered any more than childish. After they witnessed the first rehearsal, they were all reduced to silence and when it ended the still young Mozart received a standing ovation from a group consisting mostly of his musical peers. Mozart went on to produce several more operas including Il signo di Scipione, Lucio Silla, Il Re pastore, Idomeneo, along with countless symphonies, serenades, divertimenti and five concertos for violin. By this time Wolfgang was no longer a child and had lost his great appeal. Some time later Wolfgang and his family moved to Italy to pursue a commission to compose opera and to procure a position for him at the royal court. There he studied counterpoint with Martini and also became a member of the Society Academia Filharmonica. In Milano, Wolfgang was commissioned to compose an opera for the following year. While in this rich creative environment Mozart flourished. He attended a performance of the Miserere of Allegri, which could be heard only in Roma during Holy Week performed by the papal choir. By papal decree it was forbidden to attempt to copy the song or reproduce it in any form and was punishable by excommunication. Mozart heard the piece once then went home and reproduced it in its entirety on paper. No one has ever been able to dream of duplicating even part of this piece in that manner. Word spread quickly of what Mozart had done and soon the Pope himself learned of this amazing achievement. The Pope summoned Mozart, but instea! Don Giovanni was premiered on October 29, 1787, in Prague. Of all Mozart's operas it is unquestionably Don Giovanni, which had the most immediately revolutionary impact on suc
