"What's in a Name" - One Hundred Years of Solitude
Solitude. Whether it is by force or by one's own will, everyone experiences the loneliness and therapeutic essence of solitude. In Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, each character experiences some form of isolation throughout their life. In most of the characters' cases, after their period of solitude, that character exudes some sort of rebirth or even a cleansing from the cause for the solitude. This cleansing allows the character to move on with their life. Aside from what solitude does for the characters, the town of Macondo is not only founded in its solitary period but is forgotten in its solitary period as well. Marquez is saying that in one point in time, solitude is experienced. Because of this, the reasoning behind Marquez's naming of the book, One Hundred Years of Solitude, is the fact that through the course of the citizens of Macondo lives, each member encounters a period of seclusion; complying of one hundred years through the generat!ions. Because of the process of life, there is no one in the novel who does not live a life without some style of separation from either the world or his or her family. Through all six generations, there is always someone who is in a state of solitude. This reasoning brings about the logic behind the title. Because there is never a point where someone is not experience solitude, the "one hundred years" of Macondo's existence is filled with solitude. Whether it is from the third generation to the sixth generation, someone has come across the path of seclusion. This is why Marquez titled his prize-winning work, One Hundred Years of Solitude. r, "old habits die-hard." Many times when things were not going the way she had thought, she would secretly retract into her routine again. But after her last withdrawal, after the mysterious death of her husband, Rebeca never woke up from her solitary era. At one time, the people of Macondo had forgotten about her and presumed she had died, until, "...the main door...fell down noiselessly...he saw in the center of the room the squalid woman, still dressed in clothing of the past century...and the skin of her face was wrinkled by the aridity of solitude," (pg. 235).
