As the world turns, year-by-year there are many new technological breakthroughs of all sorts that generally make life simpler, less time consuming and convenient. With all these new advances and large-scale developments we have seemed to forgotten our place on this planet and our dependence on an intact ecosystem. What we now begin to realize, yet still do little about, is that when man destroys nature, he as a result is destroying himself. David Suzuki's Essay and a movie called Erin Brockovitch both approach this matter from two different perspectives. Suzuki stresses that we must not distance ourselves and our children from nature for it is an extension of who we are. In both Suzuki's essay and E.B. the main concern is the well being of people. David Suzuki's concern is that of species in general, and the human approach to nature that surrounds us. David states that,
Suzuki states, "When children see the great virgin forests of the Queen Charlotte Islands being clearcut, they will feel physical pain, because they will understand that those trees are an extension of themselves."(Para.9 pg.100) A very similar situation occurred in the movie E.B. when Erin's son reads a file on a family who's mother is dying of a tumor caused by the poisonous chemicals in the water. The son clearly expresses signs of deep emotion and grief for that family. It is normal for a child to be interested and fascinated by other forms of life because it's relation with nature is natural. W
