Binge Drinking
A detailed Summary of Binge Drinking
Most people have done it once in their life; we could say the person drank too much or while partying had a few too many, but across America the most serious drug problem for college students is binge drinking. Despite excuses, college students are abusing alcohol in the form of binge drinking. Up to 43% of college students binge drink within a 2-week period of time. Per pressure might be what starts the beginning of binge drinking, but when college students turn social drinking into the goal of getting drunk it becomes a major problem and now an epidemic. Binge drinking is hard to define, since alcoholic drinks are a part of almost every culture. In America, if a person drinks more then five drinks, or 70 grams of ethanol, per occasion it is considered a binge. Two or more binges in a 2-week period are regarded as frequent binging. The term binge was made to classify alcoholics into separate groups according to severity of the abuse. While studying alcoholi

nd scientists decided to classify the binge drinker as a different type of alcoholic. The most common type of alcoholic is one who drinks everyday and become irritated when alcohol is not present when craved; the binge drinker drinks less often, but has the expressed goal of drinking to become drunk at least twice in a month.
Death is the worst but also a very common result to drinking. Combine driving while drunk and the chances of death skyrocket; 62% of college binge drinkers admit to driving while drunk. Others have missed class due to a hang over, fall behind in schoolwork, and use illegal drugs. Another common consequence is unplanned sexual activities. Having unplanned sex while intoxicated can lead to the miss use of protection, which increase the chances of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy. 2% of the sex that goes on among college students who are drunk are sexual assaults or rapes.
