A detailed Summary of Baby Boomers vs. Presidential Scandals

Baby Boomers vs. Presidential Scandals

There has always been a certain amount of cynicism about politics and political parties in America. Cynicism is especially aroused during scandals, such as the Watergate scandal in the mid-1970s and the recent Clinton Sex Scandal of 1999. During these scandals, people began to express several emotions. Some people accede with such scandals because it gives them a since of authority and security. Now, in their minds, they are placed at the same level as their leader because of the leader's fault. "If the president can do it, so can we." On the other hand, some people begin to doubt the ability of their leaders to be "leaders" and become more cynical about politics as a whole. Baby boomers, those born in the 1960s and 1970s, are a group of people who, to this day, still carry a cynicism toward politics.

Cynicism in politics began many years ago. Distrust of the government versus the rights and freedoms of those being governed is what brought about the break down from England two hundred years ago. A man, whose boyhood aspirations were to be President and whose picture shaking hands with JFK were revived and shown on the local news. This President was a baby boomer, so looked on by the rest of the baby boomers as a peer, a fellow school mate, college buddy, and business man. The greatest cynicism early on was that President Clinton had dodged the draft and had tried marijuana. At least these faults could be viewed as "fallout" from the 1960s. Baby boomers looked to President Clinton to bring about direction in government and knew his strengths and intelligence could go far towards encouraging team work in the areas of business, education, technology, and international trade and politics.
