Labor disputes have been accruing since early American history. There havebeen unsettled issues that would either affect the employer or the employees. When employers and employees were unable to solve their differences employees feel that in order to have reasonable demands met they would have to cease production to gain the attention of the employer. This is what was referred to as a strike. 1636 was the first reported labor dispute. It included a group of young students who lived in Richmond Island, that where employed by Robert Trelawney. The students fell, "into a mutany"1 when their employer Robert Trelawney withheld the student's wages. In 1768 our country's first authentic labor strike took place in New York. Twenty plus journeymen and tailors walked off the job. The journeymen and tailors felt the reduction in wages that their employer put into effect was unfair. As our country grew and changed over time, the labor strikes in the past and in the present have been researched and compared, but the finger always pointed in one direction, the strikes are caused by the cutting of the employee's wages and or benefits. To support this fact research has clearly answered three basic questions: What in Harry S. Tr
uman, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton's background might have been a factor in preparing them to make decisions on the correct and expedient matter to term! The ssecond bump reagan ran into was only four months after the attempt of being assinated and only six months after taking office. On August 2,1981 Transportation Secretary Drew Lewis went to Camp David where Reagan was and informed him," that the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (P.A.T.C.O) consisting 13,000 members who manned the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airport's control towers and radar canters around the country. Were threating to strike the next day because of the refusal to meet its demand for a huge salary increase."5 Even though Reagan was man who liked to provide everything that the people demanded but, he simply can't grant PATCO the demand the wanted. If granted it would make the tax paers payers to pay over 700 million dollars in taxes a year. In addition Reagan did not want to support any organizatiation who is jepordizing the public's safety. Which now leading to a bigger issue not following the Taft-Harting Act that clearly ! The coal mine strike began in april , 1946 and lasted for forty-five days. The demands that the coal miners demanded a increase in salary, and a retierment fund. "this was the first strike President Harry S. Truman to take action on injunction proceedings occurred in the perennially restless coal fields."4 Since Truman had just got finished with the making of Taft-Hartley Act (designed to prevent strikes from beginning and to improve labor mangement.) he was not excepting such a early conflict of labor to apppear. Another of Reagan's loves was for politics. In the late 1950's Reagan ran for the governor of California and won this election. This was the start of Reagan's public political career and on January 20,1981 he was sworn in as the 39th president of the United States. What are the key factors and demands of the one major strike in each president's administration? In a resent conflict that had taken place in the past brought up an agreement that they would have this continous stoppage of work, but this did not last for long. Due to the new controversey was developed between the coal miners and opperaters. The head of this conflict was no surprise to Truman becausse the all mighty John L lewis has been known to lead stikes. This time Lewis had offended the agreement to respect of the health and welfare fund. Truman was not exactly scared of Lewis but the power that he has that can cause many problems. Also Truman new exactly what Lewis was trying to accomplish, the increase in salary. Lewis also threaten that if the workers do not receive this. They will not return back to work until the demands that are wanted are granted to the coal mine workers. At the age of seventeen Clinton watched Martin Luther deliver his famous speech, "I have a Dream." This dramatic and moving speech
