The Discrepancies in the Values of SWTSU

A detailed Summary of The Discrepancies in the Values of SWTSU

The idea of developing a proclamation of a school's key values is realistic and innovative for any university. It is the responsibility of any higher-level educational institute to promote values, to teach students to reason ethically and to cultivate the character of students, because the universities were founded as a method of preparing students for success in the real world. Although SWT included the essential ingredients for a satisfying and healthy education for all types of students in their core value statement, the school failed to put much thought into the transcription of these ideas. The main problem with the SWT core values document is the actual wording and implications of the text.

The core value statement begins by declaring:

We the faculty, staff and students at SWT, affirm that our

university exists to enrich our minds and to humanize our

hearts so that we might contribute to the betterment of

This assertion includes a very large group of people, over 20,000, and it can be logically theori

The statement further declares: "We value the modeling and teaching of honesty, integrity, diligence, courage, compassion, fairness and respect." It is not the responsibility of students to teach other students honesty, integrity, diligence and the other aforementioned values. One could expect a student to provide an example of proper morals through his own behavior, but expecting students to perceive "modeling and teaching" other students as core values is completely unreasonable.

If the school is not willing to put forth that much effort into its core value proclamation, then what is the purpose of going through the hassle of forming the declaration in the first place? However, if SWT is adamantly against consulting its community before printing a campus-wide consensus, then SWT needs to change the focus of the statement from a school-wide agreement to an agreement by the founders of the university, or simply the creators of the statement.
