At the beginning of the movie, in the exposition of the plot, we are introduced to the two main characters, Rose (Audrey Hepburn) and Norman (Humphrey Bogart), along with a minor character, the minister who also happens to be Rose's husband. Hepburn plays a missionary in Africa who, along with her husband, is trying to convert all of the Africans to become Methodist. Bogart plays the mailman, who delivers all mail and supplies to the missionaries and Africans. We are also informed that this movie takes place in the middle of World War I.

The narrative hook of the plot is exposed when the Confederates come in and destroy the entire village that the missionaries had worked so hard to help build.
