Examine the presentation of Othello in act One

Examine the presentation of Othello in act One

In act one we are introduced to the main character, Othello. In this act Shakespeare uses an especially interesting structure to present Othello to the audience. He is presented initially in a negative way by different characters, which gives us a bad impression about him but later we are able to see him in a more positive light as a heroic character in order for us to see how tragic is final downfall is.

We first hear about Othello as we enter act one, scene one. We find Roderigo and Iago in the middle of an argument. We quickly come to understand that they dislike the general and we hear Iago's views about him. Iago complains about his system of promotion and paints an unflattering portrait of Othello. We are led to believe that Othello is professionally bombastic and proud and also personally lascivious. Iago uses a lot of language displaying racism and jealousy. He doesn't refer to Othello by name but instead refers to him as 'the Moor' (line 40), which is a racist term, used to take away the individuality of Othello.

We also see that Roderigo shares in Iago's views of Othello, he too uses racist language in referring to Othello, such as 'the thick lips' (line 64).

and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs.'

When Iago hears someone approaching, he advises Othello to go inside, but Othello replies he 'must be found' (line 30) he stresses the fact that he has nothing to be ashamed of.

me, written by me, ususing my coppy of othello!!

As we enter the second scene we find Iago in conversation with Othello. He seems to be telling Othello about the previous events and the insulting way that Brabantio has spoken of him. At this point Iago is being extremely hypocritical and two faced as we know that it was actually he who started off the negative views of Othello in the first place. We come across yet another ironic phrase in line 33:

Against the general enemy Ottoman.'

By which the property of youth and maidenhood

As Othello tells us his story we see that he first met Desdemona as he was visiting Brabantio at his house. He tells of how he used to regularly meet Brabantio and share the stories of his past. This gives the audience the impression that Brabantio is quite a racist character, as he before he knew that Othello had married Desdemona he liked him, but as soon as he found out what was going on he changed his views of Othello. He cannot believe that Desdemona would marry Othello; he thinks Desdemona is even scared of Othello:
