same sex marriage

The first article by Jonathan Rauch is titled "For Better or Worse?". He begins his article by discussing the purpose of marriage, and why he feels that marriage was mere tradition initially, and then became largely a matter of business. In today's world, he feels marriage is a voluntary arrangement between two people and consists of what they make of it. Throughout the rest of the article, Rauch spends time discussing negative views on gay marriages and why they are false. He expresses his contempt for these views and gives precise reasons why gay marriages make sense. He feels that marriage should be the norm and gay couples should be held to the same standard. This union he feels will help in domesticating men and making them reliable caregivers. He closes his article by expressing that he is homosexual and would be ashamed if other homosexuals do not push for the right to marry.

Surprisingly, I found the article very enlightening. I have never been an advocate of gay marriages, but after reading this article I do agree with a lot of what Rauch has to say. The final article is an excerpt from a speech made to the House of Representatives by Iowa Representative Ed Fallon. In this speech, Fallon argues against a bill designed to "protect" the institution of marriage. He opens his speech by letting his listeners know that he is a heterosexual male. He then proceeds to let homosexual men and women know that he accepts them for who they are. Then he relates his past and present views on gays. He feels that they are stereotyped and these stereotypes contribute to ignorance. He states that he has learned over time that such stereotypes are based on hearsay, not fact. He completes his speech by letting his audience know that he has good, stable homosexual friends, and that we should not judge them by what they do in their bedroom.

o-called stereotypes? I feel Fallon's speech would have been better served coming out of his rear end, since it is nothing more than political bullsh__. I give Fallon one middle finger up for his speech.

I was hoping this selection would be as informative and thought provoking as the previous two. However, I was thoroughly disappointed. Fallon is obviously a politician; I did not need to be informed of this at the beginning of the excerpt. I dare say, ask any person who is a bigot against black people if they have black friends and they will s
