Since all the rich people walked with such arrogance and expensive attire, things poor people wanted but couldn't afford, it was assumed that the rich person must be happy. So when Gatsby is rich, he believes he can now be happy because he is rich.

After all, u can't be with someone who cannot give u happiness. For Daisy, money was happiness, while for Jay it was Daisy and her glamour, which disillusioned him. While Jay was with Daisy, everything around her seemed beautiful. Her style, her character, all seemed magical. Now, when Jay himself is rich and at the same level as Daisy, he realizes that Daisy is not as perfect as she seemed. Daisy's money and glamour had disillusioned Jay. Daisy's wealthy and beautiful life style represented a way of life remote from Gatsby's, therefore, attractive because it was out of reach.
