Macbeth

Examine 5 scenes where Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are alone together. ~

Carefully analyse the state of mind of each of them at each point in these

5 scenes. Trace the changes in each of them and in their relationship.

In the middle of this scene Macbeth enters one of the rooms in the castle where Lady Macbeth is. Lady Macbeth has just spoken to a messenger who told her that Duncan, the king, is coming to stay at the castle that night. Soon after the messenger leaves, Lady Macbeth conjures up ideas in her head that this would be a great opportunity to murder Duncan, so that Macbeth can get to the throne as the prophecy states, but more importantly to Lady Macbeth, if Macbeth is to be crowned king, then she would also gain more power as she would become queen. Macbeth enters the scene alone with Lady Macbeth just after Lady Macbeth has cleansed herself of everything feminine and sold her sole to the devil so that she will not back down to her intentions of murdering Duncan. It is in this scene that we begin to see signs of evil, deception, and deceitfulness from Lady Macbeth as she reveals her intentions and cunning ideas. On the surface she may seem innocent for instance when she casually in!

In this next scene where Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are alone, Macbeth has just left Duncan's supper with him and Macbeth has not stopped thinking about what he should do, whether to listen to Lady Macbeth's plans to murder Duncan or to stick to his own judgement and just wait his turn to be king and do nothing in the process. In this scene, Lady Macbeth's character of being deceitful and cunning becomes further more evident as she continues to try to persuade Macbeth to murder Duncan. In doing so she attacks his personal nature and she talks about his lack of bravery and courage and desire to do what is necessary to become king. She then states claims that he does not really want to become king or is too frightened of this position. All this so that he might be influenced to think so and defend himself and give in to her. Macbeth still holds a strong feeling that he does not want to murder Duncan and would rather just wait. Lady Macbeth reveals more of herself and of her charac!

King would be leaving the castle, but inside she is getting this information in order to help herself with plotting the murder. Her deceitful nature is reflected as she tries to convince Macbeth to be very friendly and act welcoming towards Duncan in order to not reveal their real intentions. Macbeth does not have the same mind set as Lady Macbeth and he believes that if the prophecy is true, then he will become king eventually. But Lady Macbeth is not as patient as Macbeth is. Although Macbeth, like any other man in his position would have an intense desire to become king, he does not openly show it but is rather more wary and pretentious about his actions. Macbeth is not as enthusiastic or willing as Lady Macbeth about plotting the murder and is reluctant to discuss plans, as he wants to leave it to fate. This scene is the first where we can see the relationship of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth unfold. Lady Macbeth is clearly trying to exercise some influence !

nd seems more cautious and very anxious. But both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth change when they are around each other. Macbeth is now completely regretful of murdering Duncan and is in fact envious of Duncan as the peace and restful sleep Duncan has now is what Macbeth can only dream of as he has constant nightmares about Duncan. In this scene the
