To the commoner, William Shakespeare's masterpiece, Hamlet, is a simple tragedy. In this assumption, most people are correct for in its simplest form, Hamlet is a tale about a middle aged prince who seeks revenge for his father's murder but in the process ends up being killed himself. To the learned reader, however, Hamlet, and its main character, Hamlet, are more complex than just a simple tragedy. In the play, we see that Hamlet's personality and mood switch several times. From the disillusioned, to the melancholy, Hamlet's personality is a wild ride of a character.

It is true that the ghost Hamlet saw could have been the devil. However it is just as plausible that the ghost was a figment of his imagination. The most plausible choice is the ghost is a figment of his imagination telling him, what he wants to hear. Hamlet has a major issue of being depressed and melancholy during the play. While everyone suffers from a little bit of depression now and then, Hamlet suffers from chronic depression. He directly admits to his melancholy, "Out of my weakness and melancholy," (II,ii,l.630) only once. While he hints at and talks about his depression in round about ways "O, what a rouge and peasant slave am I" (II,ii,l.577), it is very rare that Hamlet specifically mentions his depression, however that may explain Hamlet's craziness towards Ophelia and the other characters. While it may be that he acted crazy to put a mask on his plot, it could be just as equally plausible that Hamlet is acting out his depression by acting crazy. Hamlet could be showing his melancholy through insanity. Hamlets visions of the ghost and his over intelligence problem could be rooted to his gloom.

Although, Hamlet, was written centuries ago, it still holds relevance today. As a modern world continues to move faster and faster towards the future, people are getting more and more stressed out.
