Existentialism: A Twentieth Century Creation
In life we must choose our own path. If we make a decision and then not see it through with conviction then we will not experience life. The most important questions in life are not accessible through reason or science but rather through the expression of free will. Freedom is the choice through which humankind creates it's own nature. It is what distinguishes the human race from animals and plants. While we are free to choose our own path we must be ready to accept the risks and responsibilities of our decisions and lack of decisions. There is no rational basis for decisions but rather an important factor in determining individuality. In life we know that death is inevitable. It is best to accept that life is meaningless and death is certain unavoidable fact. With this acceptance humans will live a much healthier and happier life

Gregor defines himself within the context of his family. Once they decide that he is no longer needed he dies from lack of importance. Gregor is guilty of not choosing to live his life but rather to conform. This results in his transformation into a giant insect and ultimately to his death. He dies because he didn't make use of his life instead he regarded it as a simple and ordinary life with no choice. He suffered the consequences of failing to accept the life path that he chose. Gregor is an example of how modern man can become alienated from society.
