Competitiveness is considered one of the most complicated concepts in business life and the primary priority for a company to stay efficiently in a market . As much as the battle between the companies increases and the level of competition rises , some requirements have become necessary for the different aspects of work in order to create a top quality image and be considered the best by consumers . Emotional labor , a highly demanded quality by firms , is perhaps the most essential consequence of competition in business life with its merits and drawbacks on workers . The fact that the emotional labor is pushed by competition in order to resemble the prestige of the company and to be used as an instrument of satisfying customer service , is an obvious indication of an increasing need for emotional labor . As Wendell Berry argues in his book , "As a purely economic ideal , competition does not contain nor imply any such instructions."(131) . That's why there appears a couple of risks for individuals in the public related jobs while the need for emotional labor increases .The contrast is not derived from emotional labor itself but it's totally coming from the ideal of competition which doesn't have any structure that should imply any such consequence of thoughtlessly done works like pollution , soil loss , and social differences . As a result , As Hochschild argues in her book "The managed heart", implying the requirement for emotional labor , "The more important service becomes as an arena for competition between airlines , the more workers are asked to do public relations work to promote sales ."(92) . Why are the workers asked to do more public relations work or better , emotional labor indeed ?. First of all , emotional labor is the opening gate for competitive firms into public life. The work done by employees in service related jobs is closely related with the quality of a company . The way workers interact with the public such as an attractive smile can easily gratify customers and provide a prestigious image for that company . Secondly , because of the related interests both of the customers and of companies , emotional labor is demanded by customers as well as by companies . When ! At this time its impact on us is seen with the concept of emotional labor but it's evident that later it will demand another thing and then any other thing ........ . herself from her feelings ?."(89).
