Going to college is a great opportunity for young people. However, it will be just you now, mom and dad aren't around. Leaving home means leaving your comfy room, all your wonderful friends, loveable pets and perhaps a girlfriend or boyfriend. These factors make leaving home a stressful task and coming in to the college environment as a freshman leads to more stress. It's a wonder college students survive with all the stresses that they have to put up with.

One major cause of stress can be due to the roommate. Many students get stuck living with someone they don't get along with. While some people like to keep things clean and tidy others a very messy. One student who had a roommate his freshmen year got very upset when he found his toothbrush by the sink under a pair of his roommates dirty underwear. Sometimes you will go to bed early for a test only to get woken up at two o'clock like Jed Fuesting was his freshmen year, when his roommate came home and puked all over the floor. Even having a good roommate can be stressful at times, such as when they decide to stay out all night without letting you know and you stay up all night hoping their ok. Working to get along with a roommate is important, but it takes compromise and t

Fortunately there are many ways for college students to deal with stress. However the most popular ways actually have opposite effects and create even more stress such as drinking. Drinking, a favorite college past time is often done at the bar late Thursday nights after everyone has completed their studying. While drinking is a great time and helps you forget your worries, in truth it adds to them. For Example, a student at FSC went to the bar Thursday night after studying five hours strait for a Physics test and got so drunk he had a hangover the next morning and couldn't get out of bed for class and missed his test. These sort of instances happen all the time and work against the student who is just trying to forget about stress. However dealing with stress is a fact of life for college students and no matter what you do it will always be there.
