Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, translated by Marie Borroff, is not only an adventure and romance story, it is also a story about a young man facing challenges to determine who he is. Gawain is faced with many difficulties that allow him to discover his own true identity. The challenges he faces throughout the story test his character as well as his morals.

After Gawain beheads the Green Knight he goes through many journeys and hardships to find the mysterious Knight and receive his blow, which is fairly deserved. Part three of the book leads us deeper into the personality and psyche of Gawain, allowing us to decide if he a chivalrous knight or not.

While traveling along he befriends a man and accepts the invitation to stay with him for a few days. During the stay the man proposes that himself and Gawain participate in a game-like challenge. The man is a hunter and offers his daily earning to Gawain in return for the earnings of Gawain. The challenge seems ironic from the start, considering the host tells Gawain to spend the day sleeping and relaxing.

This time, more than ever before, she explains to Gawain her feelings for him. She offers herself to him completely. She has fallen for him and wants to show him in all ways imaginable. Gawain simply refuses. He does so in a way that says it isn't that he doesn't want to. He denied her in a very chivalrous way. She accepts his rejection but asks for a gift to remember him by. Gawain explains that he has nothing to give her that is worthy enough for a token of love. She answers this by proposing to give him a beautiful ring. Gawain refuses to take the ring because he has nothing in return to give her. He does not want to take a love-token gift when there was nothing for him to give her to remember. With this she offers one last gift. She gives to him a belt of green and gold. At first Gawain again rejects a gift. This time she explains to him that this belt is special, and the man who wears it cannot be killed by anything at all. Before rejecting this last gift, Gawain realizes!

On the third day the hunter receives a great challenge when he hunts down a fox. The hunt is long and perilous and lasts quite awhile. The scene at the house was not much different than the days previous. The lady of the house once again entered Gawain's room, this time wearing very little and showing off more than before.
