Writers are not only noted for what they write, but mostly for their style of writing. The art and beauty of the retrospective narrative is when a writer depicts a significant event and / or place from their own personal experience. For instance, E. B. White's One More to the Lake is masterful in taking us back into the past as well as The Town Dump by Wallace Stegner. Even though, Loren Eiseley's The Brown Wasps reminisces about the past, he has an unusual way of expressing this. Although writing has been in existence for centuries, retrospective narratives gives us an opportunity to look into the heart and soul of the writer.

In Once More to the Lake, E. B. White decides to revisit the camp he knew as a child, which was on the lake in Maine. At the onset of his journey to the lake with his son in tow, he begins to recall the campsite environment. As he describes the lake, he gives it a spiritual appearance, along with using sensory details such as sight, smell and sound to paint a vivid picture of nature at its finest. For instance, he uses words like, "this holy spot" and "the stillness of the cathedral," when he describes the lake and also says "the bedroom smelled of the lu

Now as for The Brown Wasps, Eiseley's past account is revealed in a different way, which he also compares to brown wasps returning to their hives. For instance, he makes the distinction that everything has a sense of place, which is illustrated by when beginning his story by describing a train station and the homeless men sleeping and waiting for there time to come, even though they are awakened by a passing policeman in order to get them to move along to somewhere else. In addition, after Eiseley notices a field mouse running from an open field towards his place of residence, which at that time he realizes this mouse is driven out by the early construction stage of shopping center. Once he is inside his apartment, he describes what he observes regarding a plant, he says, "... I saw a little heap of earth on the carpet and a scrabble of pebbles that had been kicked merrily over the edge of one of the flower pots. To my astonishment I discovered a full-fledged burrow delving!

These narratives have many similarities as well as some differences. Once More to the Lake, The Town Dump and The Brown Wasps all represent time that has past and are very descriptive in their reflection. Each author has a manner of reflecting on their childhood. For instance, in Once More to the Lake E. B. White thinks about what the campsite looks like and when he arrives, he sees that not much has changed since he was there last, which was many years ago. When Wallace Stegner describes the dump in The Town Dump, he also describes the town and the surrounding and illustrates this as if he was remembering what it was like. Even though Loren Eiseley's The Brown Wasps is very descriptive, he represent time past in each incident that he comes across at that time and then revisits his childhood towards the end of his story. The setting that these stories take place are different but not drastically. White remembers the beautiful setting of nature, very country setting. Al!
