Worlds Apart
A detailed Summary of Worlds Apart
Vietnamese women, in comparison to American women, follow a well-regulated set of customs. They follow the traditions that have been passed along for many centuries. While Vietnamese women's lives are largely regulated by their native traditions, American women have lives filled with choices. Where the Vietnamese women follow a narrow path of their own customs, American women have before them a vast field of freedom.
Vietnamese women are taught to stay loyal to three kinds of people: parents, husbands, and children. To their parents and husbands, they must show complete obedience. This involves the never-ending tasks such as housework, caring for their family, and whatever else the woman is instructed to do. The Vietnamese parents want their children to learn through hard work and show gratitude, for one day they may have nothing. They have little independence, so they are rarely allowed to make their own decisions. In contrast, American women tend to be more independent and much stronger. American parents sometimes give their children more freedom so they can learn from their experiences and use that information to make their own decisions. Usually, the Vietnamese girls do not pick their husbands; their parents do. It is a custom for Vietnamese parents to arrange a marriage for their children. To go through this process, they study the Chinese zodiac signs of their child and his/her intended mate to decide if there is any compatibility or wealth. This often happens when the girl is young, of about eighteen years or younger. Also, it is especially important that the girl stays pure until the wedding has taken place. After the woman is married, she will hold the promise of care and respect towards her spouse and his family, despite the difficulties. Unlike the Vietnamese culture, an American woman can choose her own mate. She will choose to marry for her own reasons: love, fame, fortune, etc. In a typical American wedding, the bride and the groom are asked if they agree to be husband and wife, and they shall answer "I do". Congeniality is usually a goal of the couple for the Americans. In the Vietnamese culture th!
Divorce is rare in the Vietnamese culture. No matter what the situation is, the women always swallow their pride and obey their husbands. If the husband dies, his wife shall stay a widow. It is not appropriate for one to remarry or have numerous divorces like many American women are allowed to do.
