Capital Punishment

The United States has many problems-problems that need the attention of people as a whole. Murder is one of the problems. Murder is such a heinous crime that it deserves an appropriate punishment. Capital punishment is the appropriate discipline against cold-blooded killers. Murders deserve a fair and speedy trial just like anyone else.

Many people support capital punishment, because the death penalty has been around since the beginning of history. The judicial system has allowed murderers to be executed if they were proven guilty. The often used statement an "Eye for an Eye" has its origin in the Bible which states that people should be punished appropriately for their actions. It basically comes down to vengeance. The families of people who were innocently slain need to feel satisfied that something is being done about the killings. Murder is an attribute to capital punishment. Capital Punishment should be enforced more often and more quickly than it is.

Capital punishment is defined as the officially authorized execution of the death penalty on persons determined by appropriate legal procedures to have committed a criminal offense (Capital 290). Capital punishment is presently a prominent

Next, some supporting factors of the death penalty. The Bible supports the death penalty. One scripture reference states that "who so sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his own blood be shed (Bible: Genesis 9:6)." Another scripture reference states that "and thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, and foot for foot (Bible: Deuteronomy 19:21)." Another scripture reference states that "ye have heard that it hath been said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth: but I say unto you, that ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have the cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain (Bible: Matthew 5:38-41)." Lastly from the scripture references that states "judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye!

certain narcotics crimes, and (in the case of the federal government) espionage and the theft of military secrets (Draper 68).

Another aspect of capital punishment is time. The amount of time it took for someone to be convicted and put to death in the past was at most three to four days. Now the time it takes for someone to be convicted and be executed is an average of eight years and five months (Costanzo 76). First, the trial must take place. Next the jury must deliberate. Then the verdict is given. Lastly the sentence is given and if the murderer doesn't he could have filled appeal after appeal trying to get free, delay his sentence or execution. On average it used to cost 3.2 million dollars to execute a person, compared to five hundred thirty-five thousand dollars for an average life imprisonment sentence (Draper 118). The public looks at this, as an investment in safety since these murders will never kill again (Henry A1).

The nation as a whole has the need to be satisfied. Pure vengeance is the only reason on the part of the victim's family. They need to feel satisfied that something is being done about the killing of their loved ones (Draper 142). If it weren't for the moral satisfaction of the public the death penalty would have been abolished long ago. And more heinous crimes would still be taking place.

Next of all, what causes people to live a life of crime. When 97.5% of the crimes in this nation go unpunished, criminals take the chance of not getting caught. The fact is crime pays and criminals know it, and they act accordingly (Kamen A1). Other countries have very low crime rates. Maybe because their punishments are much harsher. Look at the boy who got caught spay painting a car in Singapore, he got caned.
