Outdoor Recreation
America's current concepts of recreation, leisure, and play have evolved from the ancient Greeks, Romans, and early American Colonialists, and have continued to grow throughout the nineteenth and twentieth century American culture. I will demonstrate this by defining the ancient Greeks', and Romans' ideals of recreation in their time, and compare it to the defined ideals of current American recreation. American's current concepts of recreation are not solely emphasized by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The are also influenced by some other primitive societies. Primitive societies are ones lacking science and technology. The ancient Greeks, and Romans are not considered "primitive" societies in that they had much science and technology for their time. In these primitive societies, ther is no sharp distinction between work and play. This is mainly on account of the fact that these people do intense bursts of work, then they relax. The work that they do is infused on an irregular schedule with play and ritual. Rituals and leisure to these primitive people is closely associated with warfare. In 1958 the ORRRC(Outdoor Recreation Resource Review Commission) was created. This was put in place to tend to America's growing outdoor recreation needs until the year 2000. One of the affects of the ORRRC is that it led to the establishment of the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation. It also created the LWCF(1965), the Wilderness Protection System(1964), the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, and the National Trail System(1968). Second, I believe it would be a wise decision to make each cabin, since they would far apart, large enough to handle a large group. Most people on campgrounds come with families or friends. Providing for large groups would be very wise. 2.) In the United States today, the government regulates over thirty-three percent of the nations land. With the government owning a third of the land, it is their duty to manage and take care of it. How does a government "care" for things? They create organizations and legislation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ One of the most unique recreating societies was the Romans. In the early stages of the Roman Empire, recreation was experienced a lot. People recreated a lot for physical fitness. The Romans were very utilitarian, fitness to the Romans was more important than aesthetics or spiritual benefits. Some people say that the addiction to recreation was the fall of the Roman Empire. There was an increase in wealth, which led to idleness of the Plebs (common people), wich led to a need for recreation during these idle times. Many more holidays were created that indirectly promoted idleness. At one time, there was two hundred holidays in a year. Recreation such as running, jumping, and other sport were corrupted into combat, and then into cruelty. An example of this is the slaughtering of Christians in the sold out amphitheater. Recreation was cruel and twisted particularly under Caligula, and Nero. These people that come to camp sites are regularly from an urban or suburban area. They are
