Religion has been the main determining factor in almost all the decisions that has been made through out North American history, whether directly or indirectly. Direct ways in which religion affected the society of the colonists, were things such as, government, race, human rights, and economy. The more indirect ways that it has been affected, was through things that they did subconsciously, because of their beliefs, such as the impartial way of land distribution, and the set up of their government and economy. From the time of Christopher Columbus through the Great Awakening religion has always been there, and it is something that is here in the present, and will follow us through the future centuries.

Government was basically the church. From the very beginning, in Europe, you were told what to do by either the Pope, or some other clergyman. The system was set up with the Pope being the supreme leader. Then you go down the line in order of importance: the priests, pastors, deacons, etc... In the north, the Puritan priests were the ones that decided what happened in the community. They were at all the town meetings, to lead them and tell the people what to do. In the south, the government was set up basically the same way, but it wasn't as direct and close as it was with the Puritans. Since they were a colony for the monarchy, anything that they did had to go through the Pope first. Yes, they had a king, but he was not the one in charge. He couldn't make the decisions on his own.
