A thriving habitat is essential to the lives of our wildlife. Wildlife habitats are continuously decreasing in the United States due to several factors. The increasing numbers of lost wildlife habitats are a result of human populations that manipulate them to meet their needs. The diminishing habitats of wildlife are a serious problem, but several organizations are working toward probable solutions.

The biggest problem with diminishing habitat is due to human activity. Humans destroy it to provide more land and products for human consumption. Humans replace complex ecosystems with cultivated areas dominated by single species and with pastures for livestock. Humans drain wetlands for agriculture of urban development. The effects of landscape modification are huge, and they continue to happen. About eighty percent of deforestation is used to convert land for agriculture. Conversion of wetlands, forest, and natural grasslands to other uses is happening at such a high rate that these ecosystems may be reduced to very small amounts by the middle of the next century (Orians 3). This is a concern for the next century because of the continuous loss of habitat. Yet, a large amou

nt of people still manipulates the habitat in the few remaining untouched wildernesses. Many times certain species become at risk for extinction because of the mismanagement of land. The ext!

inction of a couple of species of animals could lead to the degradation of habitat (Tran 1). Ecosystems in the U.S. are threatened by total destruction. Since the ecosystems are threatened species that depend on them are endangered. To protect our endangered species, our habitats must also be protected. It is important to know how much habitat is being destroyed or degraded and where this habitat is located in the U.S.

Several solutions are being worked on to help save wildlife habitat. The conservation biologists propose a solution for the construction of disperal corridors. A corridor will reconnect pieces of isolated habitat and reduce the rate of wildlife extinction. This is the best solution that conservation biologists have found at this time (Tran 1). In South Carolina, The Wildlife Federation is promoting habitat of wildlife. They are putting up split-rail fences that have native plants intertwined and sporting birdhouses for backyards, schoolyards, workplaces, public buildings, city parks, and roadside rest areas.
