Human Relationships in the Handmaid's Tale
In The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood, Offred has many different relationships. Some of those relationships are with the Marthas, the Commander's Wife and the Commander himself. Offred does have a relationship that is not like the others. This relationship is with Nick, a Guardian. This relationship that Offred and Nick have together is special to Offred, but it is also very dangerous. Guardians and Handmaids are not allowed to interact with each other, if they do and they get caught, the punishment is death. However, whenever Nick and Offred are near each other, Nick tries to interact with her in some way, even if it is subtle. When Offred first notices Nick looking at her, she is unsure of herself. She wonders why he is interacting with her. She thinks it might be a test to see what she would do, or if he's just being friendly. She even thinks that he may be an Eye. Since it is forbidden for Offred and Nick to speak to each other, Offred does not know what to do about it. She feels confused about Nick and why he would do such a thing to try to interact with her. "Nick walks in, nods to all three of us, looks around the room. He too takes his place behind me, standing. He's so close that the tip of his boot is touching my
One afternoon, the Commander's Wife asks Offred if she wants to have sex with Nick, to make a baby. Serena Joy, the Commander's Wife, is bribing Offred. If Offred has sex with Nick, she will get a picture of Offred's daughter. Offred is not quite sure what to do at this point. If she is caught with Nick, the penalty is death. Even risking her life, Offred takes the offer, most possibly only to get a picture of her daughter. However, Offred may have taken up the offer so she could be able to have sex with Nick. Serena Joy did not mean Offred to have sex with Nick frequently, but Offred still does. Each time, she feels as if she is going to get caught. One time, Offred actually tells the reader the truth about having sex with Nick. Offred describes to the reader that she always asks Nick "is it too late?" They have an understanding that it is never too late to have sex. When they have sex, she keeps her eyes open. She never did that with the Commander. This appears as if Offred wants to savor the moment while it lasts. She said that she wants to memorize him so she can recall the memory of him later. This indicates that she enjoys being with Nick. If Offred never has sex again, she is preparing herself so she can have memories about what it is like to have sex. Offred finally has sex with Nick one night. At first, Offred tells the reader that when she got to Nick's room, they had sex right away. Also, she tells the reader that she felt alive again and how she felt about having sex. Yet, that was not how it actually happened. Then Offred tells how it "really" happened. She says that at first it was a bit awkward when she and Nick were talking, but then they began cracking jokes and that eased her up a bit. Offred informs the reader that there was no romance and that she thought she would have sex with him only once. She told the reader that the first time as well. "He puts his hand on my arm, pulls me against him, his mouth on mine, what else comes from such denial. Without a word. Both of us shaking, how I'd like to..." Again, Offred does not tell the truth about having sex with Nick. She tells the reader that she does not know how it went. Afterwards, Offred felt like she betrayed Luke by having
