first deer

A detailed Summary of first deer

The car ride to the cabin was long, as usual. I enjoyed the time with my grandfather, though. His eyes were like a hawk, he would see everything. We would drive by fields of snow. Back by the tree line I wouldn't see anything, but he would pull over and check out the wildlife with his binoculars. Then after he pointed them out to me I would realize what I missed.

We arrived at the cabin. This cabin was built like a house, but entirely of logs. A wood stove heated the cabin. The stove gave an older look and feel to the place. The cabin had a porch that wrapped around the front and side. It gave me a sense of living without technology.

As we moved all our hunting gear and clothes from the car to the cabin it began to snow. It was early November so the snow was expected. There was about three to four inches of snow on the ground already and the fresh snow made it good for tracking deer.

We went inside the cabin and met up with everybody staying there for the night. We all played poker and I came out the loser because I didn't have any idea what I was doing. After we ate dinner, I relaxed for a while. Before we went to bed I went outside and it was still snowing but the snow was more then snow. It was like crystals glowing

As I was climbing down my gun clinked against the metal and the deer was up and running again. Again I aimed and fired, pumping the gun to reload as fast as I could. I saw the deer go down again but I could not see where. I finished climbing down the ladder, reloaded my gun, and walked to where I saw the deer fall the first time. I could see the bright red blood on the crystal white snow, and I knew I had hit him.

With the noise of thunder, my gun fired once, twice, then three more times as he began to run through the woods. My finger rested on the trigger and my sights lined up in case there was any more movement. The deer fell down behind a big oak tree and I could only see the rear legs. I didn't see any movement but after thirty minutes, I decided to climb down from my stand.

I stood there with my gun aimed at him for what seemed like eternity. My arms were tired from the weight of the gun and shaking from the cold. I watched him as he slowly moved his way towards me and into a clearing. The clearing was probably about 60 yards away and was the perfect place for a shot. I let the deer walk until he was clearly into this opening.

There was about a foot and a half of snow on the ground. It wasn't snowing anymore but it was deep enough to make the trek through the woods difficult. I could barely see where I was going because of the darkness, but I was guided by the moonlight. The woods always seem scary to me in the dark because your eyes can play tricks on you. Sometimes what is really just a tree may look like an animal or a person when it's just the way
